The Boeing 737 is probably the most flown commercial airliner in FSX or any of the previous versions of flight simulator. There are only 2 third party add ons for the fsx 737. The first being the Wilco 737 Pilot In Command and the second being the Ariane 737. There is much talk about the PMDG 737 NGX but not so much as even a screenshot yet.
My personal favourite is the Wilco fsx 737 and it is this fsx 737 that I have flown the most. I love every thing about it , but the Virtual Cockpit needs revamping and there are interfacing questions with add on hardware which is a shame.
The default FSX 737 2D and Virtual cockpit I would say at present are the best I have ever seen, ( ground breaking infact). The FSX 737 has come along way since earlier versions ( fs2004, fs2000) but lets look back to where it all started with the Dreamfleet 737
The Dreamfleet 737
This add on was the first 737 I ever bought and it blew me away. Not only did it have a printed manual, but it also came with a video ( yes a video not a dvd) of a Goflight 737 trip to Portugal, which is still the best 737 cockpit dvd around.
What really impressed me though was the introduction of a working FMC ( Flight Managment Computer) and additionally an interactive demonstration on how to use it. For me it was total immersion.
Dreamfleet had set a presidence with this add on even though unlike the fsx 737 it had no virtual cockpit ( no big deal at the time ). The sounds were good and so were the flight dynamics, and because of the FMC L Nav and Vnav wre usable.
Looking at this shot of the cockpit brings back a lot of memories. There a heck of a lot of details on this flight simulator that make it way ahead of its time. It is such a shame that Dreamfleet did not progress this Boeing 737 flight simulator to fs2004 and onwards.
One charicteristic with earlier add ons for flight simulator was they had no virtual cockpit, the dreamfleet 737 was no exception, but at the time it was no big deal. What I did really like visualy was the fact thatreal photo's were used to make the cockpit, and this gave this flight simulator real depth. The realism of the 2D cockpit has never been matched.
Everything in the 2D cockpit was functioal including the radio. You can even lock the cabin door.
This shot above shows how a simle 2D cockpit can be made to look like the real thing. If only they could make a virtual cockpit look this real. If the Dreamfleet 737 was flyable in FSX I would still fly it to this day a truly great Boeing 737 flight simulator.
